Torque wrenches need to be accurate. Period. When a wrench tightens a bolt the rotational force -the torque – causes the bolt to stretch as the threads seat tightly against one another. The trick of the torque wrench is to put enough force on the threads the bolt won’t work loose, however not too much that it risks cracking the metal. This tolerance range can be quite narrow, and staying within it may be the difference between a smooth running machine and one stopped dead in its tracks.
